Philosophy

Operational Technology must be engineered and managed as a lifecycle discipline, preserving both Asset Integrity and Information Integrity. From the physical asset and its interconnections, through accurate measurement, signal validation, processing and secure handling, OT must create data that is accurate, traceable, secure and fit for purpose.Once that foundation is right, everyone can use the data: Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, analytics, business systems, and future applications. As an OT leader, I establish the expectation that technology is not complete when it is installed, commissioned or generating data. It is complete when Operations, Engineering, and Maintenance have the trusted data, documentation and effective controls required to safely operate and maintain the asset throughout its lifecycle, including eventual succession.More importantly, it reinforced my belief that Operational Technology extends far beyond automation and commissioning. OT is responsible for creating trusted data and enabling the safe, reliable operation of the assets and processes it supports.Regardless of geography, industry, or contract complexity, every client ultimately expects the same outcome:
safe, reliable operation, accurate OT data, and dependable Transfer of Care, Custody, and Control.

About

My career spans more than 40 years of operational technology—from pneumatic and relay controls through analog instrumentation, early digital controllers, proprietary distributed environments, and today’s interconnected OT systems.I’ve worked at the intersection of design and field realities, through commissioning, operations, optimization, leadership and commercial delivery, across minerals, water, power, healthcare and manufacturing in diverse technologies and countries. That experience has taught me that technology itself is rarely the hardest part.Technology changes.
Connectivity expands.
Complexity increases.
The harder challenge is bringing physical assets, technology, people, information and maintenance together in a way that can be operated, trusted and sustained. The physical world imposes limits.
Equipment has tolerances.
Signals have imperfections.
People vary in capability.
Organizations vary in standards, conventions and practices.
Legacy systems endure.
Firmly held beliefs can be difficult to change.
Then the digital world adds another layer of complexity. The responsibility is to ensure that good engineering, reliable information and practical operations remain at the centre of the system.OT therefore requires more than technical standards. It requires disciplined integration and governance to bring systems, people, practices and expectations together without compromising
Asset Integrity or Information Integrity.

One experience profoundly influenced my thinking.During a life-safety incident requiring immediate elevator de-energization, the control action was obvious, obtaining the necessary technical information was not. This in turn led to the development of innovative energy isolation tool that improved visibility, accountability and traceability. That experience reinforced a critical lesson:
Transfer of Care, Custody, and Control is not simply a project milestone—it is an operational necessity...

...where engineering, technology, people, information and operational responsibility come together.
